The good and the bad ambassador

has long been considered almost unfit to serve as foreign minister of Germany. But yesterday Guido Westerwelle has enjoyed a huge crowd in Cairo's Tahrir Square, acclaimed as the Egyptians did not happen to a German Foreign Minister Genscher's time in Prague. Instead Klaus Wowereit is the beloved mayor of Berlin, one of the architects of the transformation of the former capital city divided by the wall in most transgressive of Europe. He too is now engaged in a diplomatic mission. But the atmosphere surrounding his visit are entirely different. Wowereit is in Saudi Arabia to enter into agreements with an economic dictatorship. A bad habit that in these days of revolution in the Arab countries sounds like a hoax. Article on Letter 43.
